INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A mother of five was gunned down on her front porch early Monday, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers.
According to IMPD, 40-year-old Nerva Singleton was found dead on the porch just before 4 a.m.
Relatives say she was the mother of five and grandmother of one.
One of her daughters is pregnant with her second grandchild.
"My mother was lively," Singleton's daughter, Jana Singleton, said. "She was full of energy. She was the life of the party. She was willing to help anybody. She was just this family's backbone. We're a small family. My mother was all we had."
The shooting happened in the 5600 block of Dobbs Ferry Drive. That's near 52nd Street in the Liberty Creek subdivision.
IMPD said family members inside the home heard gun shots coming from
outside. They opened the door and saw the woman lying on the steps in front of the house. They also saw a light colored Ford Taurus type vehicle flee the scene. The family immediately called police.
Commander Michael Jefferson with IMPD said they don't get many runs in this area and it is shocking to them.
"This comes as a shock to us when someone gets shot like that," said Jefferson.
Family members identified the woman as Nerva Singleton.
Police say they don't have any suspects. They are asking if anyone saw something to call police.
"It could be your family, my family; it could happen," family friend Lucille Mayes said. "We must come together and let's stop this."
As for the shooter, family members didn't hold back. "God have mercy on your soul," Mayes said.
