the body. Individuals with trisomy 13 often have heart defects, brain or spinal cord abnormalities, very small or poorly developed eyes extra fingers or toes. They may have an opening in the lip. There may be born with or without an opening in the roof of the mouth. They may have weak muscle tone (hypotonia). Due to the fact that there are several life-threatening medical problems, many infants with this condition do not survive. They usually pass away within their first days or weeks of life.
