Marlon Wayans, the 51-year-old actor and comedian, recently revealed a surprising reason why he never tied the knot: he didn’t want to make his mother, Elvira Altheia, jealous of another woman. In an interview with The New York Times, Wayans candidly shared his feelings about marriage and his deep love for his late mother.
Wayans explained that his mother’s passing in 2020 had a profound impact on him. He described her as “very needy” and recalled discussing his single status with her during their final moments together. His heartfelt words to her were, “I never got married because I always wanted you to be my No. 1 girl.” Losing his mother shattered him, and he realized that she was his whole world.
The fear of making his mother feel second to any woman led Wayans to remain unmarried. He cherished their bond and didn’t
want anything to jeopardize it. His father, Howell Wayans, also passed away in March 2023, along with 58 other loved ones in recent years. Wayans described this experience as “biblical” and used it as inspiration for his latest comedy special, Good Grief, set to premiere on Amazon Prime on June 6. Through humor, he explores real-life pain and personal growth, acknowledging that he now lives differently without his parents.
For Wayans, living differently means limiting his time on his phone, walking, and praying more. He feels closer to his parents in spirit when he prays, believing that they’re listening. Although he never married, Wayans was in a long-term relationship with Angela Zachary from 1992 to 2013. His decision to prioritize his mother’s feelings over marriage is a testament to the depth of their bond and the impact she had on his life.
