Alfonso Ribeiro, best known for his iconic role as Carlton Banks on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” recently made headlines when he publicly rejected any assistance from filmmaker and studio owner Tyler Perry. In an interview with Closer Weekly, Ribeiro revealed that his acting career had hit a roadblock after playing the beloved Carlton Banks character.
“It was one of the greatest roles that I ever was fortunate enough to play, but it was also the role that stopped me from acting again because people couldn’t see me as anything else,” Ribeiro shared candidly.
A fan suggested on social media that Tyler Perry should help revamp Ribeiro’s career. The tweet read, “tylerperry needs to revamp alfonso_riberio career, I just know he could.” However, Ribeiro swiftly shut down the idea, responding, “I don’t need or ever want that
man to do anything for me.”
The exact source of the tension between Ribeiro and Perry remains unclear. Interestingly, Ribeiro has twelve directing credits on the former Tyler Perry sitcom “Meet the Browns,” suggesting that the two have crossed paths before. Meanwhile, Ribeiro’s former “Fresh Prince” castmate and longtime friend, Will Smith, maintains a cordial relationship with Perry. The billionaire filmmaker even named a soundstage in his Atlanta studios after Smith.
As for Ribeiro’s current-day career, he has transitioned into hosting and is now the face of “Dancing With the Stars.” Despite the challenges he faced after Carlton Banks, Ribeiro remains steadfast in his decision not to seek Perry’s assistance.
In Hollywood, where relationships and alliances can shape careers, Ribeiro’s bold stance sends a clear message: he’s determined to forge his own path, regardless of the industry’s expectations.
