The mother of a 5-year-old who went missing in Colorado, Alexus Tanielle Nelson, is in custody after authorities discovered human remains of a child in her apartment. The authorities suspect that the remains belong to the missing kid.
Nelson, 27, was initially charged with one count of trying to influence a public servant.
More charges were added: child mistreatment resulting in deletion, tampering with the post mortem and tampering with physical evidence. Detectives found the child's remains in Nelson's apartment.
"We are very confident that this is our victim," said authorities.
The child's identity will be confirmed by the coroners office.
The investigation started when
the child's maternal grandmother called the emergency line from another state. She told the authorities that her daughter, Nelson, sent her some alarming texts and expressed concerns about her granddaughter's safety.
Officers went to Nelson's apartment.
Nelson claimed that she gave up her daughter for adoption but had no records to prove it. The authorities could not verify the adoption through state records either. The grandmother called the emergency line again and the officers followed up at that time.
Aurora authorities said that Nelson deliberately lied to the officers which led to Nelson's first arrest for trying to influence a public servant.
