Iyanla Vanzant Loses Her Youngest Daughter

This is not the first time that Vanzant has faced such a devastating loss. On Christmas Day, 2003, her oldest daughter, Gemmia, died after battling a rare form of illness. She was 30 years old. God must’ve really, really trusted me to give me a soul to bring into life, and to trust me with the courage to send her out. Vanzant also shared that she does not view the hardships of her life not including her childhood issues, her divorce and her daughters’ passing as “difficulties.” Rather, she sees them as part of her life purpose that allows her to relate to others in their pain and sorrow. I would say that the purpose of my life required that I had a depth of experience that would allow me to speak to people in the depths of their pain, in the depths of their sorrow. Vanzant also has one surviving son, Damon, who she had when she was 16. She is 69 years old.
