Kendra was in her house when shot and killed.
Houston resident Kendra Childs, the mother of a two-year-old daughter, was shot and killed just a day before her 20th birthday. Police so far have little information on possible suspects or a motive, prompting a good deal of social media speculation (using the hashtag #RIPKendra) about who might have been responsible for her death.
Childs was killed in drive-by shooting, with the occupants of a black Camaro firing five shots into a second-floor apartment from the parking lot of the apartment complex around 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, 13 September 2016. Police say Childs was alone in the apartment at the time of her death and was likely sought out as the intended target of the shooting:
A drive-by shooting at an east Houston apartment complex left one woman dead on Tuesday afternoon.
Houston Police Department
spokesman Victor Senties said the shooting happened in the 5300 block of South Lake Houston Parkway. The call came in at about 12:15 p.m.
A resident of the apartment came home to find his girlfriend shot to death in a bedroom in their second-story apartment. The boyfriend quickly ran out of the home to seek help and called the police, Sgt. Mark Holbrook, of HPD's Homicide Division, said.
According to police, witnesses saw someone in a newer-model, black Chevrolet Camaro with standard rims and tinted windows firing multiple rounds into the apartment.
Many social media users posting with the hashtag #RIPKendra viral have asserted that Childs was murdered by a jealous ex-lover of her boyfriend. Someone using the Twitter handle @_ladykocaine and the name linglingbaby had issued veiled threats, and some users proclaimed that linglingbaby had previously been romantically linked with Childs' boyfriend
