In a recent episode of the “Tea Time” podcast with Raven-Symoné and Miranda Maday, actress Meagan Good opened up about a surprising challenge in her acting career: her looks. While many might assume that being conventionalliy attractive is an unequivocal advantage in Hollywood, Good’s experience tells a more nuanced story.
Meagan Good, known for her roles in films like Think Like a Man and Anchorman 2, revealed that her beauty has sometimes been a hindrance rather than a help. She shared that casting directors have often deemed her “too pretty” for certain roles, leading to missed opportunities. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked into an audition, and they were like, ‘She was great, but we just don’t realistically believe her as this character because she’s a pretty girl,’” Good explained.
This bias against her looks has had tangible effects on her career. Good recounted instances where filmmakers were concerned that audiences wouldn’t “buy” the idea of the leading man being with someone as beautiful as her.
This perception not only limits the roles she can play but also undermines her talent and versatility as an actress.
Despite these
challenges, Good remains undeterred. She emphasized that her passion for acting and creating meaningful art has always been her driving force, not the desire for fame. “I know that what I want to put in the world has never been about being famous,” she said. "And also, I don’t have a desire to be famous. I don’t mind getting through the airport quicker, I will say that. But just [with] as many perks come with it, come the other things as well or the mistreatment . Whatever it may be".
Thankfully, Good’s career continues to thrive. She is set to star in Tyler Perry’s upcoming film Divorce In the Black, and her relationship with fellow actor Jonathan Majors is also flourishing.
Her resilience and dedication to her craft serve as an inspiration to many, proving that true talent and passion can overcome even the most unexpected obstacles.
Meagan Good’s story is a powerful reminder that the entertainment industry, like many others, is fraught with biases and challenges. However, her journey also highlights the importance of perseverance and staying true to one’s passion, regardless of the hurdles along the way.
