Mary J. Blige still has to carry around the remnants of her not so tasteful divorce. After her Super Bowl success, she went on the Breakfast Club to talk about what’s going on in her career as of now. She spoke about the album, and talked about her new single “Rent Money.”
During the interview with with Charlamagne and DJ Envy she explained that “Rent Money” is basically about having to pay overhead. She also talked about facing alimony that she was forced to pay to her ex-husband, who ran through her money while they were married. It was alleged that he had several illicit affairs all on MJB’s dime.
“I wrote that song with the writers during that time,” Blige revealed. “I had to pay all
this alimony, and I had no money to pay it. I had to go on tour to pay it. I had to go on tour to pay the alimony. I had to go on tour to pay the rent because he had spent all the money. By the time I got to the deposition and saw everything he did, I didn’t have a dollar left. He spent everything. He knew he spent everything and was asking me for more.”
She added, that “‘Rent Money’ is about a vacancy.”
She was asked for clarification. She simply said that after the alimony hit, she could not afford to pay overhead and alimony so she had to go out and work for it. That’s how the tour was born.
