Sy’rai Smith was born on June 16, 2002, which also happened to be Father’s Day. Her parents are Brandy Norwood (the renowned R&B singer) and music producer Robert Smith (known as Big Bert). The couple revealed their baby girl’s name on Brandy’s official website at the time.
Brandy felt an immediate connection to her daughter, and it took her 13 months to let Sy’rai spend a night away from her. Their bond was strong from the very beginning.
In 2022, Brandy celebrated Sy’rai’s 20th birthday, describing her as her “best friend” and “the greatest friend to all your friends.” She praised Sy’rai’s wisdom, curiosity, and angelic vocals, emphasizing that she was an “angel sent from the Most High” and a light to everyone she encountered.
Like mother, like daughter! Sy’rai inherited her mom’s musical prowess. She first showcased her talents in 2020 when she posted a cover of The Isley Brothers’ song “(At Your Best) You Are Love” on her YouTube channel. She also sang
her mother’s song, “Almost Doesn’t Count,” the following year.
Brandy herself was proud of Sy’rai’s musical journey. In a later release, Sy’rai used a sample of her mom’s voice, and Brandy couldn’t contain her joy. She shared the snippet on her social media, calling Sy’rai a “special angel in disguise” who wrote, recorded, and engineered the music all by herself.
In May 2023, Sy’rai released her first solo single titled “On My Own,” further establishing her own path in the music industry.
From looks to musical talent, Sy’rai is often touted as Brandy’s “twin.” Their personalities align, and they share similar likes. Brandy loves seeing her daughter grow into her own artist.
Brandy’s heartfelt message to Sy’rai on her 20th birthday captures their close bond: “You were born a vessel and a light to everyone that you encounter Contagious.”
Sy’rai Smith is not only Brandy’s daughter but also a rising musician in her own right. Their shared love for music has created a beautiful legacy.
