Florida Mother Injures 3 Hospital Workers Before Leaving With Newborn

A Florida mother was arrested on after she injured three hospital workers while trying to take her newborn baby from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), authorities said. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Kendra Greene, 31, had given birth to a baby girl three days earlier at the Palms West Hospital. The baby was on a ventilator and other life-supporting devices in the NICU. Around 10:30 p.m., Greene returned to the hospital and "violently removed" the baby from the ventilator, pulling out a breathing apparatus, a feeding tube, and a central line from her stomach, according to court records. She then tried to leave the hospital with the baby hidden under her shirt, but was confronted by hospital staff who tried to stop her. Greene managed to leave the hospital with the baby and dropped her off with a family member. The baby was safely transported back to the hospital by Palm Beach County Fire Rescue and was in stable condition, authorities said. Greene was later found by authorities at her home, where she fled in a vehicle. She crashed and was arrested after running into a canal, authorities said. Investigators learned that Greene is a diagnosed schizophrenic and was deteriorating rapidly, according to an arrest report. She was charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a dangerous weapon, one count of simple battery, one count of aggravated child mistreatment , and one count of resisting arrest without resistance. She appeared in court and was granted a $300,000 bond. She was ordered not to have contact with her newborn and the hospital or its staff.
