It was in California that Beverly formed Maze, a band that would become synonymous with soulful, feel-good music. Their big break came when Marvin Gaye, a fan of Beverly’s sound, invited them to tour as his opening act. This opportunity catapulted Maze into the spotlight, leading to the release of their debut album, Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly, in 1977. The album included hits like “Happy Feelin’s” and "While I’m Alone".
Maze’s music, characterized by a blend of soul, funk, and R&B, produced classics such as “Joy and Pain,” “Before I Let Go,” and “Golden Time of Day.” These songs not only defined an era but also created a loyal
fanbase that spans generations. Beverly’s soothing vocals and sophisticated musicianship made him a beloved figure in the music industry.
