Michaela DePrince, a name synonymous with resilience, grace, and inspiration, left an indelible mark on the world of ballet and beyond. Born as Mabinty Bangura on January 6, 1995, in Sierra Leone, Michaela’s early life was fraught with unimaginable challenges. Orphaned during the brutal civil war, she faced malnutrition, mistreatment, and was often called a “devil’s child” due to her vitiligo, a skin condition causing depigmentation. Michaela’s life took a transformative turn when she was adopted by Elaine and Charles DePrince, a couple from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, in 1999. Her adoptive family provided the love and support she needed to pursue her dreams. Inspired by a magazine cover of a ballerina she found in Sierra Leone, Michaela was determined to become a dancer. Michaela’s talent and dedication quickly became evident. She trained at The Rock School for Dance Education in Philadelphia and later at the American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School of Ballet. Despite facing racial discrimination, Michaela’s perseverance never wavered. She made history as the youngest dancer at the Dance Theatre of Harlem and later joined the Dutch National Ballet as a soloist. In 2011, Michaela gained international recognition through the documentary

“First Position,” which followed her and other young dancers as they prepared for the Youth America Grand Prix. Her story of overcoming adversity resonated with audiences worldwide. Michaela continued to shine, joining the Boston Ballet as a principal soloist in 2021. Michaela’s impact extended beyond the stage. She co-authored the book “Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina” with her adoptive mother, Elaine DePrince, sharing her incredible journey with the world. Michaela also served as a goodwill ambassador for War Child, advocating for children affected by conflict. Tragically, Michaela DePrince passed away,at the age of 29.
