According to legal documents a man using a weapon to play with a 1-year-old child and then doing the same with his girlfriend led to his demise. Authorities took Shanika Smith, who is 37, into custody for the fatal injury of Jahmal Rogers, who authorities said was her boyfriend. Authorities said that they were called to an apartment in for an accidental wounding. When authorities arrived, Shanika told them that she had accidentally wounded a man, that was later revealed to be her boyfriend. Rogers passed away from a wound to his torso and was found in the kitchen. While speaking with the neighbors, they told authorities that Rogers and Smith had a dispute right before the incident. After hearing the bang, one witness went into the residence and had a conversation with Smith. She said that she had injured Rogers “during a struggle for the weapon ,” authorities said. While talking to authorities, Smith told investigators Rogers had lashed out at one of her children earlier in the day, pointing the weapon at his head. Hours later , Rogers reportedly physically lashed out at Smith in the

face “for smoking their last cigarette,” authorities said. That argument got worse and authorities responded to a call but left. Soon after, Rogers “retrieved his weapon and stood with it at the window,” Rogers also pointed the weapon at their 1-year-old child in playfulness. He believed that the weapon was not loaded. “Following ‘play’ pointing the weapon at their child, the woman stated that both her and her boyfriend began to ‘play’ with the weapon by pointing it at each other and taking it away,” . “Their game continued for a few minutes. It ended when the weapon accidentally discharged because the woman had her finger on the trigger when he attempted to take it away from her.” Smith then recanted her story, saying that she had pointed the weapon at her boyfriend after he had snatched it away from her and pointed it again at her. She decided to change her story again, saying that she accidentally fatally injured Rogers while he attempted to snatched the weapon from her while on the phone with an ex-girlfriend. Smith was charged with open fatal injury with a fatal weapon and child endangerment.
